Description

This asynchronous online course is designed to provide current and prospective teachers of the high school AP African American Studies course a collaborative online space to learn key ideas, concepts and resources to enhance their pedagogy in the discipline of African American Studies. Informed by the feedback from teachers around the country, the course will provide hands-on experience on best practices in subject matter presentation, course design, and student engagement centered on African American Studies. At the conclusion of the [eight-week] course, participants will leave with not only increased knowledge of the origin and make-up of the discipline but also concrete lesson and semester plans that can be used in their subsequent AP courses.

Registration Deadline: The early registration price is available through June 1, 2026. Registrations will be accepted through July 6, 2026.

Course Format
Online asynchronous course, divided into eight (8) learning modules, with an estimated engagement time of 5-6 hours per module for the learner (40 hours total). The pacing guide for this course is for participants to complete the course material in four (4) weeks. Participants can access the course material for six (6) weeks total.

Cancellation and Refund Policies:
A registration may be cancelled through June 29, 2026 to receive a full refund. Requests for cancellation must be received via email at ocpe@vcu.edu. Refunds cannot be processed once the course material has been accessed.
In the unlikely event that this workshop is cancelled or postponed due to insufficient enrollments or unforeseen circumstances, the university will fully refund registration fees, but cannot be held responsible for any other expenses, including change or cancellation charges to include but not limited to airlines, hotels, travel agencies, or other organizations.
Transfer Policy:
Registrations may be transferred to a different person if requested by June 29, 2026, in writing via email at ocpe@vcu.edu by the cancellation deadline. The participant must meet all prerequisites or qualifications required by the program.
